Movie Review : You Me Aur Hum

Ajay Devgan’s directorial debut released this week with much anticipation. For most it was seeing the beautiful Kajol on screen with her off screen husband Ajay Devgan. The trailers always showed the two main characters with a backdrop of a ship even though the cast spoke of 4 other moderately important characters. So what begins as a story about these couples turns out to actually be a story about Ajay (indigenous eh ?)and Pia (Kajol).
The story is told in a narrative form where an old man is narrating it to an old woman about the story of how a young guy fell in love. This story has three or more (I lost count) stories embedded in it. The form of narration is clearly a major flow which makes you lose interest in the movie. Not to mention a weird kid who keeps popping up and giving the stink eye. The camera person needs a better camera because this one has its zoom stuck at an eye hurting level of detail. In one scene he was focusing on Ajay Devgan’s mole on his neck (did you know he had one? I bet even Kajol didn’t know that !). Lets look at the dialogues, the dialogue writer has-as Rajeev Masand pointed out- the distinction of delivering three back to back flops in a matter of two weeks (One two three, Krazzy 4, You me aur Hum). According to him, “men are like mice-always looking for a hole” or “I am a poet, and I didn’t even know it” are supposed to make us laugh. Not to mention the absolute boring, long speeches that Ajay doles out that makes you start hallucinating Baba Ramdev. In one scene, Ajay Devgan tired to liven up a dead party at his house by singing a ghazal! The entire movie hall started clapping along with the actors on screen and laughing at the madness that is the movie itself! Ajay Devgan in his earnest effort to add masala packs in a few scary scenes too. Like the one where he is talking and the camera is pointing on the glass table-so that he looks like a mutilated ghost or the one where just as the song finishes the scene rapidly shifts to a eerie close up of a brightly illuminated MRI machine or the extra zoomed in Kajol eye! The story is blatantly ripped from the 2004 romantic ‘The Notebook’. But hey! That’s allowed now. We get all stories, “inspired” from Hollywood classics and mock them by making Bollywood film out of them. At least have the courtesy to stick to the original story line; there is a reason why the main characters die In the end of ‘The Notebook’. Finally ,all medical people, get ready to be astounded- Ajay Devgan has created a new breed of Alzheimer’s disease. Yep, in this- people become mute, have memory losses in spurts, and of course manage to shed that all important tear- even when a strange man come to your room and claims to be your husband. They way this disease has been handles is distasteful to say the least. Mr Devgan, let me introduce to wikipedia. Both ‘The Notebook’ and Alzheimer’s can be found there. Even the direction was awkward. The scenes cut at all the wrong places and editing was zilch. Songs showed in just for the heck of it. Kajol strip dances when Ajay tells her she is being sent to a psych-ward!! A final note on the four side characters. They are there in every scene and not included in the final most important one (bad bad !). Apart from their presence, Sumeet Raghavan (Sarabhai vs Sarabhai) shows of his beautiful acting skills in a dead movie.Divya Dutta is not exploited even though she s a awesome actress. Isha Sharwani is only there for her beauty looks and OMG-dance moves. And I don’t remember who the last guy was-oh yea-Karan Khanna! He abuses, runs naked on the ship, flaunts his body and suggests naming the baby F-dash-dash-K-E-R (but then again, dialogue writer is retarded!). All in all the movie deserves a saving grace 1 out of 5. Just an afterthought-Kajol, try playing some normal roles. Blind in Fanaa, Metal Illness in this .. eh what’s next? Oh yea, Karan Johar’s –‘My Name is Khan’ with Sharukh Khan. Ftw!!

Spiderman 3

The most eagerly awaited movie it black .. oops i meant back ! In the third part of the trilogy , Spidey is shown wearing a slick black dress. Don’t know much about the story , but spiderman this time has three enemies Sandman , HobGoblin (Harry) and finally the most deadly Sybiote/Venom ! Its going to be an awesome battle and rumors are that Harry turns good and dies ! The final trailer releases in November 2006 and Movie releases May 2007. Until then heres the official countdown !

Here is the unofficial plot :

Third film in the highly successful “Spider-Man” series sees several new villains and a new woman enter Peter Parker’s life. With his secret now revealed to both Mary Jane and Harry, Peter must face the consequences of his actions and his new life together with Mary Jane as they finally form a relationship. Yet their newfound open display of love has yielded some unfortunate results, not the least of which is Peter’s upset boss determined to make his life hell for causing his son emotional distress. Not helping is a young investigative reporter named Eddie Brock who Jameson has hired to find out why Mary Jane dumped his son for Peter – what’s Parker’s secrets?

At the same time an escaped prisoner hiding out on a remote beach is caught in a dreadful accident and finds himself turned into a shape-shifting sand creature. Peter’s investigations into the past of this ‘Sandman’ brings him in contact with two very different things that will inevitably alter his life. The first a young woman named Gwen Stacy, daughter of the city’s new police chief who is developing a soft spot for Peter. The other, a black substance which ‘merges’ with Peter’s costume and gives him new found abilities.

Things come to a head however when Harry Osborn, determined to take revenge against Peter for his father’s death and now equipped with what he needs to pull it off, teams with The Sandman in a new variation of his father’s Green Goblin guise and causes mayhem. In the ensuing chaos lives are lost, including people very close to Peter, whilst the black substance covering his suit separates from him and merges with a distraught Brock to form something else entirely – a creature unlike anything he’s ever faced. A ‘Venom’ that he may not be able to stop.

Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna

This is one of the movies i have been awaiting from for the day i read about it on net about Karan Johar’s next Dharama Production venture. So when the Audio CD came out and was priced at a luering Rs.99 (Sony BMG’s fight against piracy) I was dying to buy the orignal Audio CD and not go for the regular mp3 CD!

But my dission of buying an orignal CD just for the total craze i have for the film was’ent very pleasing to my parents. “99 bucks for just 10 songs.. buy the normal mp3 CD from the shop like you always do ” Naa..But i wasent going to agree with them. This movie deserved my share of 99 Rs. ! So that night i logged on to Indiatimes Shopping and bought the CD! The plan B (convincing my parents) , an art that i have mastered over 16 years , was a challenge this time. But i was not to fail, and they passed the matter off.

Now the only thing i had to do was wait for the CD to arrive. FOr the next two days i jumped at every dorebell that rang and shrieked at the sound of door opening. After three days of impatient waiting it fuinally arived in a neat white cardboard box. I snatched the packet form the delivery guy which positevly mabe him think i am crazy and leaped in the air (which futher asserted the fact i was crazy). ihurridely paid him 120 Rs (20 extra for cash on delivery) and banged the dooron his face *He is’nt comming back to my house;is he? I wasted no time in ripping the CD out and opened winamp to hear the music on my 5.1 speakers . I also noticed they had shipped a free small poster along with the CD which had the lyrics of songs behiend it. I let out a whislte . Man was i excited !!I also noticed a theterical trailer as a bonus in CD.

I have played the all the six tracks almost 10 times by now. My mom(who rips off hindi music and movies like no ohter crtitic manages ) whinced at the tracks and passed them off as “the same old songs..no change. NO creativity . Waste of money !” . Well i realled enjoyed each song and will suerly write a review soon . But for right now : – Kabhi alvida naa kehna…..(hmm) ( hmm)
